2021 Royal Rumble PPV Review

The 2021 Royal Rumble took place on Sunday. The Royal Rumble is one of my favorite PPVs because of the uncertainty of the event. This was a Rumble like no other because there were no fans due to the ongoing Covid restrictions. The fans make the Royal Rumble, but it was something I was still looking forward to. We had the Men and Women Rumble matches. Roman Reigns defended his Universal Championship against Kevin Owens in a Last Man Standing match. WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg challenged Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship. Sasha Banks also put up her Smackdown Women’s Championship against Carmella. We already knew that Edge would return for the Rumble match. Did we have any other returns or surprise entrants? Let’s see how the 2021 Royal Rumble was.

The first match of the night saw Drew McIntyre defend the WWE title against Goldberg. This match came about when Goldberg returned on Legends Night and challenged McIntyre. They didn’t get the proper build because Drew tested positive for Covid. These two fought before the hell rang and Goldberg speared the champ through the barricade. After making his way to the ring, McIntyre ordered the referee to start the match. During the short bout, Goldberg landed his spear and jackhammer, but the champ kicked out of both. McIntyre landed the Claymore on Goldberg to retain the title. Winner and Still WWE Champ: Drew McIntyre

Match Rating: 2/5- Short and simple, but effective.

Sasha Banks defended her championship against Carmella in a rematch from the TLC PPV. This was another good match between these two. Carmella have improved so much over the past year. Sasha Banks is as good as it gets in that ring. A lot of good back and forth action from these two. In the end, Sasha locked in the Banks Statement for the win. Winner and Still SmackDown Women’s Champ: Sasha Banks

Match Rating: 3.25/5

We had the Women’s Royal Rumble match. We had surprise entrants like Torrie Wilson, Victoria and Jillian Hall. The NXT brand was represented with Rhea Ripley, Shotzi Blackheart, Dakota Kai and Ember Moon. Bayley and the returning Naomi started out the match with both having great showings. Bianca Belair came out third and immediately went after Bayley. We saw Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler wreak havoc before Jax eliminated her partner. Lana eventually eliminated Jax. Belair, Ripley, Baszler and Charlotte Flair had great showings. Flair, Ripley and Belair were the final 3 after Natalya got tossed out. They all battled until Belair and Ripley teamed up to eliminate Flair. After several back and forth dramatic moments, Bianca clotheslined Rhea over the top to pick up the win. Winner: Bianca Belair.

Match Rating: 4.25/5- This was a great Royal Rumble match. My picks were either Ripley or Belair, so I was good with the decision.

Roman Reigns defended his Universal Championship in a Last Man Standing match against Kevin Owens. These two have been feuding for the last couple of months. Reigns has always found a way to get one over Owens. The match went all over ThunderDome and throughout Tropicana Field. Reigns beat the hell out of Owens, tossed him off the ThunderDome through a table again. Reigns also used the steel stairs and even speared Owens through the LED boards. Owens fired back with a good amount of offense of his own. Owens hit a sick Senton Bomb from the top of the forklift onto Reigns through a table. They continued to battle, and it seemed Owens was about to win as he handcuffed Reigns to part of the stage. Reigns tossed the referee into the board as he were about to count to 10. Heyman helped him back up and he proceeded choke out Owens. Winner and Still Universal Champ: Roman Reigns

Match Rating: 4/5

Finally, we had the Men’s Royal Rumble match. We knew ahead of time that Randy Orton and Edge would start things off. Some surprise entrants were Carlito, who looked amazing and fared well. To my surprise, Christian was another one and lasted to the end. Damian Priest represented the NXT brand, and he had an amazing showing also. Priest has been rumored to be headed to the main roster, will this be his debut? We also saw the return of Seth Rollins also. Riddle had an amazing showing and almost made it to the final four. Rollins eliminated Riddle to cut down to him, Strowman, Edge & Christian. Edge & Strowman fight to eliminate one another. Christian comes from behind and tries to help Edge dump Strowman. Strowman and Christian both get eliminated as Edge hangs on. Rollins comes from behind of Edge, but he fights him off and eliminates him. Edge looks to win but Orton hits the ring from behind and drops him with the RKO as the crowd explodes. Orton was never eliminated. Orton and Edge tangle as Orton goes to toss Edge but Edge counters and eliminates Orton for a huge pop. 2021 Royal Rumble Winner: Edge

Match Rating: 3.75/5- This was another really good Royal Rumble match. Edge, Bryan, Rollins, Strowman or Cesaro were my picks. Where’s Keith Lee?
