The Clash of Champions Gold Rush will be taking place tomorrow night. As we all know, all champions are to be defended at the PPV. SmackDown Live has always been by favorite of the two major WWE brands for the last few years. Roman Reigns will defend his Universal Championship against his cousin, Jey Uso. In a triple threat ladder match, the Intercontinental title on the line. Jeff Hardy, A.J. Styles and Sami Zayn will be vying to be the Undisputed Intercontinental champion. Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura defend the SmackDown tag titles against the Lucha House Party. Bayley defends her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Nikki Cross. On Raw, the big match will see Drew McIntyre defend the WWE title against Randy Orton in an Ambulance match. For me, there are 4 great storylines headed into the Clash of Champions PPV. Three are from SmackDown and the other on Raw.
Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso
This storyline has been great between the two cousins. Roman Reigns came back from his hiatus, aligned with Paul Heyman, and became a monster heel. They have highlighted the lineage of their family’s and how prominent they are. While Jey has played the fun cousin, Reigns has been plotting the entire time. This past edition of SmackDown everything came to a head. Jey Uso called Reigns out earlier in the night, but he never showed as Reigns instructed Heyman to address him. Heyman said Reigns would respond later that night in the ring. Reigns can Heyman came to the ring and was immediately interrupted by Uso. After cutting a promo, Reigns left and Uso also did a promo as Reigns was leaving. Uso left, got to the top of the stage, and was hit with the Superman Punch out of nowhere and cut a promo over the body of Uso.
Battle for the Intercontinental Championship
With Sami Zayn being out during the pandemic, the WWE held a tournament to determine a new Intercontinental champion. A.J. Styles won the title from Daniel Bryan in an epic match. Jeff Hardy went on to defeat Styles for the championship. Zayn returned with his Intercontinental championship and attacked Hardy. Hardy, Styles and Zayn have been battling leading up to their match at the Clash of Champions. When you put three of the best in the world in one ring, you will get magic. When you add a ladder and the tradition of the Intercontinental championship, this has a chance to be special. With these kinds of matches, you wish there were fans because it would make it much more special. Either way, when you put Jeff Hardy in a ladder match you might get a crazy bump or two.
Randy Orton Goes After Drew McIntyre
Randy Orton has been putting together some of his best work since WrestleMania. The buildup with Edge for WrestleMania and Backlash has earned Orton even more respect. Orton failed to capture the title at Summerslam. Orton went on to put Keith Lee over in a major way at the Payback PPV. Keith Lee was inserted in the Orton/McIntyre feud for the championship. Orton took McIntyre out leading up to the Payback PPV. McIntyre returned to take out Orton with a series of Claymore Kicks. Orton returned on Monday to take out McIntyre not once, but twice. At the end of Raw as the roster was battling Retribution, Orton struck for a second time. After hitting the RKO on McIntyre, Orton took out Keith Lee with a punt. The ambulance match at the Clash should be a good one and I’m expecting Orton to win his 14th title.
Alexa Bliss and The Fiend
Alexa Bliss was brought into the feud between Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman. Alexa Bliss and Braun Strowman has a long history between them. The Fiend used that to change Braun Strowman into a legit monster. Strowman even went after Bliss and it seemed like the Fiend rescued her. It seemed like nothing was going to come about that whole situation. Nikki Cross said Bliss has changed and Bliss slowly started showing a character change. Whenever Bliss heard the name of the Fiend, she would go into a trance. The Fiend has now gotten involved more with his signature laugh started playing this past Smackdown. The red glare of his played during Bliss’s match with Lacey Evans. She beat down Evans, left and just stared at Reigns who was headed to the ring. If you remember, Reigns defeated the Fiend for the title, and he could be coming for it.
These 4 storylines have me intrigued moving forward. Who knows how long the Uso/Reigns feud will last? Could we see Jey Uso be catapulted into a singles star with his brother on the sidelines? The Intercontinental Championship ladder match could and should steal the show. The Mysterio Family drama with Seth Rollins has been another storyline I’m intrigued to see how things turn out in the long run. Many people love to focus on the negative in wrestling, but I’m not one of them.
