The potential quarterback carousel has been the talk of the NFL ever since the offseason began. We had Matthew Stafford dealt to Los Angeles for Jared Goff and a couple of first round picks. We just saw Carson Wentz traded to Indianapolis for a couple of picks. There have been rumblings about Russell Wilson and Seattle after he made a statement about not being protected. The other big story that will not go away is the Deshaun Watson and Houston Texans situation. The Texans didn’t involve their start player in the GM nor head coach search. As we all know, this is the same franchise that dealt DeAndre Hopkins last offseason. J.J. Watt was granted his release from the franchise a couple weeks ago. Houston says they will not trade Watson, but they may be forced too. Here are 6 potential destinations for Deshaun Watson.
New York Jets
The Jets have hired a new Head Coach in Robert Selah and several of his former players have sung his praises. New York has a ton of money to spend on upcoming free agent. They also are rumored to want to move on from Sam Darnold. The Jets could turn things around quickly with an acquisition like Deshaun Watson. The Jets would be a potential destination for many free agents if they were to acquire Watson.
The Miami Dolphins has been rumored to be a potential landing spot for Deshaun Watson. Miami is a franchise on the rise as they were a game away from clinching a playoff berth. The Dolphins would be a great trade partner for the Texans. They would get a potential franchise quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa along with several first round draft picks. With the Texans not having any first round picks, this would be perfect. Houston would get the draft picks they need along with another quarterback. For Deshaun Watson, he would be going to a great situation with Brian Flores as the coach.
Washington Football Team
The Washington Football Team is coming off a playoff appearance and winning the NFC East. The defense is intact for many years and the offense got its fair share of weapons. Taylor Heinicke signed a 2-year deal for the team after an impressive playoff game. The team is expected to move on from Alex Smith, who was an inspiration to everyone last season. In my opinion, if Washington added Watson they would become immediate Super Bowl contenders.
The Chicago Bears are moving on from Mitchell Trubisky. The Bears still have one of the better defenses in the league. On offense, they have a good offensive line and some weapons. David Montgomery is one of the toughest running backs in the league. Allan Robinson is coming off a tremendous season despite lackluster play from the quarterback position. By trading for Deshaun Watson, the Bears can rewrite a wrong when they passed on him in favor of Trubisky.
New Orleans Saints
This is most unlikely to happen, but with the impending retirement of Drew Brees New Orleans may want to explore this option. The Saints have Taysom Hill and could bring back Jameis Winston, but Watson is a different player. Watson is arguably one of the top-5 quarterbacks in the league right now. He’s coming off a career year without a lot of help around him. With the weapons the Saints have on offense and with that defense, they would become instant Super Bowl favorites.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers are the last team on my list. By reports, it seems like San Francisco would like to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo. The 49ers are coming off an injury-filled season where a lot of their top guys were injured. This team was in the Super Bowl last season and still has a championship team. If you put Deshaun Watson in this offense, they will also be a favorite to make the Super Bowl. With one of the best defensive lines in the league, the 49ers would be dangerous on both sides of the ball.
As you could see, Deshaun Watson could make a lot of teams Super Bowl contenders. We see why the Texans are skeptical on trading their star quarterback. Houston will not be winning anything, anytime soon with Watson so they might as well unload him. They could get another quarterback in the process, but most importantly some much needed draft picks. Will the Texans trade Watson? If so, who will land the star quarterback?
