We have another NXTTakeover and this one took place on Sunday night. This is the 31st ever NXTTakeover and these events never disappoint. This one took place at the newly minted Capital Wrestling Center. Finn Balor defended his NXT championship against Undisputed Era member Kyle O’Reilly. Io Shairi put up her NXT Women’s title against Candice LeRae. Damian Priest defended his North American Championship against Johnny Gargano. Kushida was looking for revenge as he took on the Velveteen Dream. Lastly, Santos Escobar put up his NXT Cruiserweight championship against Isaiah “Swerve” Scott. Let’s see what happened at NXTTakeover 31.
NXTTakeover 31 started out with the North American Championship match. Damian Priest won the title in a ladder match at NXTTakeover 30 after Keith Lee vacated it. Johnny Gargano is one of the best ever in NXT and competed in more Takeovers then anyone. Gargano used his speed and craftiness against Priest. Priest used his size and martial arts on the challenger. As expected, these two put on a good wrestling match. Gargano had times when we thought he’d walk away with the title. Gargano tried to use his sneaky ways especially moving security in the way as Priest dove to the outside. While officials checked on security, Gargano hit Priest with a low-blow but didn’t get the pin fall. In the end, Priest hit the Reckoning from the middle rope for the win. Winner and Still North American Champ: Damian Priest
Match Rating: 4/5– Really Good Opener and the Right Guy Won.
We had Kushida take on the Velveteen Dream. The Velveteen Dream has been bullying Kushida over the last few weeks. With Dream making Kushida’s life a living hell, Kushida had an attitude change. Kushida found himself being more aggressive and not being the nice guy. Kushida started the match by attacking Dream as he posed on the ropes. Kushida stayed on Dream throughout the match while working on the arm and shoulder of Dream. Dream got some offense in, but not too much as Kushida dominated. In the end, Kushida locked in an armbar to make Dream submit. Winner: Kushida
Match Rating: 3.5/5- Kushida continued to attack Dream after the match as the officials run Kushida off.
It was time for Santos Escobar to defend the Cruiserweight championship against Isaiah “Swerve” Scott. Escobar became the new champion a few months back in a tournament to crown a new champ. Scott is the only one to defeat Escobar in the tournament. Escobar went on to form El Legado del Fantasma and they been feuding with Scott for a while. Scott controlled most of the beginning of the match with his high flying ability. Escobar finally got the advantage for a while, but Scott regained control. El Legado del Fantasma showed up, but Ashante came and helped. Escobar hit his Phantom Driver, but Scott barely kicked out. Scott fought back and hit a 450 splash, but Escobar kicked out at the last second. In the end, Escobar kicked Scott into some exposed still and hit a knee to the face to win. Winner and Still NXT Cruiserweight Champ: Santos Escobar
Match Rating: 4/5
Io Shirai put up her Women’s Championship against Candice LeRae. Candice LeRae became the #1 contender in a battle Royal a few weeks ago. These two have a history against each other as they tore down the house at NXTTakeover: Toronto. These two are really good and I expected this to be a good match. LeRae has been showing a much more physical style as she put Teagan Nox out. Io started out on fire, but LeRae took control of the match. LeRae continued her onslaught, but the champ fought back. They continued to go back and forth with submission moves. LeRae inadvertently hit the referee and Shirai hit him after going for the moonsault. LeRae hit her finisher and Johnny Gargano came out dressed as a referee but Io kicked out. The referee kicked out Gargano and he tossed LeRae the title in the process. LeRae hit Shairi with the belt but she kicked out. Io hit the Spanish Fly followed by her moonsault for the win. Winner and Still NXT Women’s Champ: Io Shairi
Match Rating: 3.75/5- Great match! Toni Storm appeared on the screen after the match and said she’s coming to NXT. After that, it was revealed that Ember Moon was the person returning to NXT.
We had the main event as Finn Balor defended the NXT title against Kyle O’Reilly. Kyle O’Reilly won the opportunity a few week ago to challenge for the championship. This match felt like an old-school battle with how physical it was. Finn Balor dominated the match with a lot of physicality. Balor worked on the mid-section of O’Reilly throughout the match. O’Reilly did his thing by working on the leg of Balor. They continued to beat the hell out of each other. Balor and O’Reilly both were bleeding from the mouth. In the end, Balor hit the Coup De Grace for the win. Winner and Still NXT Champ: Finn Balor
Match Rating: 4.5/5- Finn greeted O’Reilly after the match as a show of respect. Ridge Holland appeared with a beaten down Adam Cole over his shoulder. He tossed Cole to the ground as Balor & O’Reilly watched from the ring. Strong and Fish rushed the ring and checked on Cole as NXTTakeover 31 went off the air. Is this the beginning of the breakup of the Undisputed Era? It’s been said that Finn was taken to the hospital also.
