The 2021 NBA All Star game has come and gone, now the second half gets under way Wednesday. With the trade deadline coming up, teams will be making moves to improve their championship chances. We will also get players being bought out and go to potential championship squads. Blake Griffin is the first one seeing he got bought out by the Pistons and signed with Brooklyn. We are focusing on the Eastern Conference and who is there top 5 teams. The Philadelphia 76ers are currently atop of the conference by a half game over the surging Brooklyn Nets. Let’s take a look at the top 5 teams in the Eastern Conference at the halfway mark.
The big 3 in Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving are three of the best offensive players in the league. With the addition of Blake Griffin, the Nets should blow past the 76ers to eventually become the top seed. The Nets will need to add some interior help on the defensive side. With the offense that the Big 3 bring, they should be enough to reach the NBA Finals this season. The other big issue for this team will be if they all can stay healthy.
The Bucks are currently two games behind the 76ers in the Eastern Conference. Giannis is coming off a perfect game in the All-Star game and won the MVP award. The Greek Freak will carry that momentum over to the regular season. The two-time defending MVP will make a run in the second half and put himself into the MVP conversation. Milwaukee has a good team, but don’t be surprised if they make a move close to the deadline.
The 76ers are sitting atop of the Eastern Conference and Joel Embiid is looking like the frontrunner to the MVP award. Ben Simmons is looking like he’s trying to be in the running for defensive player of the year. Philadelphia is built for a long postseason run and Doc Rivers is doing an amazing job. The 76ers could also add some help in the form of a trade before the deadline also. If Embiid continues playing at an elevated level, the 76ers would be hard to stop in a 7-game series.
Boston has underwhelmed this season, but they turned things around before the All-Star break. They were two games under 500 but went on a 4-game winning streak. They have two of the best young scorers in the league in Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. When Marcus Smart return from injury, Boston will be more dangerous. We all know that Danny Ainge is known for making deals and they could pull off another one this season.
The 5th and final team in the defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat. They are currently sitting a half game behind the Knicks for the 5th spot in the Eastern Conference. The Heat have had issues with keeping Jimmy Butler healthy this season. Just like Boston, the Heat are known for making moves to improve their team. With Miami being a place players want to go, don’t be surprised if they add some help before the trade deadline.
