As we all know, the 2021 NBA All-Star festivities have come and gone, so now it’s time to play ball again. Team Lebron blew out Team Durant as expected with Giannis taking home the MVP award. Domantas Sabonis won the Skills Competition. Stephen Curry took home the 3-Point Contest in an epic finale. At halftime, Anfernee Simons defeated Obi Toppin in the Slam Dunk Contest. We have already determined the top 5 Eastern Conference yesterday. We now turn our attention to the Western Conference. The Utah Jazz are currently sitting atop with the best record in the league. Are they the best team in the Western Conference? Let’s take a peep at the top 5 teams in the Western Conference at the halfway mark.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers are currently in the 3rd spot in the Western Conference. They are a half game behind the Suns and a half game ahead of the Clippers. They went into the break on a 2-game losing streak. Anthony Davis has been out with his strain Achilles. Davis will be returning, and the Lakers will be fine. With Embiid being held as the MVP favorite, this will motivate Lebron to take it out on the league. No matter where they finish in the West, it will be hard for anyone to beat them in a 7-game series.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers have lost 3-games in a row heading into the All-Star break. This is a championship squad and we fully expect them to turn things around quickly. Los Angeles will hit their stride, plus they have been rumored to make a deal or two also. Many expect them to meet the Lakers in the Conference Finals, but we thought that last year also.
Utah sits atop of the Western Conference with a 27-9 record. They are also riding a 2-game losing streak as they went into the break. Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, and Mike Conley were All-Stars this season, but they still lack respect. Utah has a wonderful team that has shooters, play great defense and just a great all-around team. Can they eclipse the Clippers and meet the Lakers in the Conference finals?
Portland is currently 5th in the Western Conference and riding a 3-game winning streak. Damian Lilard has put this team on his back in the absence of C.J. McCollum and Nurkic. Last year, this was the most dangerous team heading into the playoffs. Unfortunately, they had to play the eventual champion Lakers in the first round. When and if they get healthy, they could be a sleeper to reach the Western Conference Finals. With a backcourt like Lilard and McCollum, this team could surprise a few teams in the playoffs.
The Phoenix Suns are riding a 4-game winning streak and sits 2nd in the West. The addition of Chris Paul has done wonders for this team with his leadership. Devin Booker is one of the best scorers in the league. With Booker being snubbed for the All-Star, he could take his game to another level. The Suns are also rumored to be make a deal before the NBA trade deadline. With such a loaded Western Conference, could they surprise some and at least reach the 2nd round?
